Decred (DCR) Altcoin Mining Starts Later Today

A quick reminder that in a few hours the official launch of Decred (DCR), a new interesting PoW/PoS altcoin is happening. Decred is currently running on testnet with the official launch of the mainnet planned on 12:00 PM CST February 8th, 2016 – you can watch a live countdown here. here crypto currency uses Blake256 14-rounds algorithm for mining and there is a cgminer fork (source) already available, though currently only getwork is supported and not stratum. The cgminer for Decred GPU mining is available below, compiled for 64-bit Windows, ready for mining solo or on some of the mining pools for DCR. This cgminer works on both AMD and Nvidia GPUs as the currently available ccMiner forks from tpruvot and sp do not yet have support for Decred even though they do have support for Blake256 14-rounds algorithm.

If you manage to catch the official launch it is better to start by solo mining with a local wallet as this might be more profitable at the start and then switch to some of the available Decred (DCR) mining pools. This might be a bit of a challenge however as there is no yet a GUI wallet for the coin, so you will need to use the console version of the wallet to make things work before you are able to start mining solo. There are already binaries available for the wallet, but they are password protected and the password will be posted at the coin’s launch. So you have a few hours to get everything downloaded and ready for the official launch, you can even test on the testnet before the launch of the main network to make sure everything is working properly.

There was a post by the DCR dev, stating that stratum is not needed for mining this coin. It was developed such that getwork would be sufficient to supply new work readily to the miner; in fact, I guess stratum would bring no added value. It’s somewhere in the ANN…

Should cgminer work with nvidia 750ti on win10? It doesn’t detect them for me..

Well, stratum might not be needed, but some people are reporting very high percentage of rejects, so it could have helped for sure.
The cgminer works on Nvidia GPUs as well, though we have not tested it under Win10 with GTX 750 specifically.

If this fork of cgminer produces too many rejects when mining this new altcoin then it is not worth and you should optimze and beta-test the code first before publishing any releases.
I’m a c/c++ programmer myself, although I’m not into forking software for mining, but I have to say that there are many incompetent coders out there who don’t know how to write fast and reliable code. Rejects are mostly caused by hardware errors. And hw errors are the result of operating the hardware in an inproper fashion. If this is about operating a GTX 750 then you have to know the gfx card inside out, in order how to properly access and execute the GPU’s internal hardware-built functions and take the most performance out of it.
We already had those problems with cgminer back in the days of LTC mining with Gridseed until a version of cgminer came out in 2014 which was able to mine Litecoins using Gridseed hardware in the most efficient way with only a few rejects and hw errors.
In other words, coders usually need their time to figure out how to wirte proper source to properly operate a certain target hardware. You can’t build common code for all gfx cards or all hardware device. Every hardware is different and requires its special software and drivers to use in the best and most efficient way.
In the case of DCR I suggest to wait until an optimzed or better version of cgminer is forked by someone out there……..

Ya, I can definitely see that with all the rejected shares….
I’ve got a gtx980 and 2x 750ti on Win10. No problem running cgminer from my end. Though, I read some people suggesting to run separate instances of cgminer for each gpu. I’ll test that when I get home though. For now, one instance seems to work by default for me.

One more thing: I’ve just checked some of the source from the github link provided here. The person or guy who wrote this fork is using a version of cgminer and additional libraries which are mostly made for operating AMD gfx cards. So you shouldn’t be surprised receiving too many rejects and hw errors when mining DCR with Nvidia’s GPU’s. Simply put, this fork is simply not optimized for Nvidia hardware, it’s mostly for AMD gfx users.

This works fine with my nVidia GeForce 660 TI. I’m not getting a single reject so far. I took the “I” intensity setting off, because that crashed the card. After that I changed to Diff 4 and now I get no rejects.

Is mining pools for Decred on http://yiimp.ccminer.org/ still working ?
I am traing on my Claymore’s dual ethereum miner v15 with no luck :/
