Ethereum (ETH) Reaching New Heights, Forks Spiking Too

The last few days we have seen yet another serious spike in the price of Ethereum’s Ether (ETH) coins reaching a new all time high at almost $6.5 USD per coin and showing growing interest from users including miners. Things have gone almost crazy around Ethereum in the last few days and we have even started seeking some of this interest moving onto the Ethereum forks as well, so if you have not been following these, then you might want to check them out. There seem to be three different forks active at the moment – Expanse, Shift and Soil with the first fork released being Shift, though at the moment Expanse seems the most promising alternative.

You can mine these Ethereum forked altcoins the same way you can mine Ethereum using ethminer, they use the same Dagger-Hashimoto algorithm as the original they have been forked from. DecredJWallet, a Java-based GUI Wallet for Decred (DCR)

The altcoin Decred (DCR) had a bit of a rough launch and it seems that there might be some work required to optimize things and make them run smoother in terms of block time and difficulty adjustment, still the coin launched with a lot of user interest and large amount of hashrate was thrown at it right from the start. Still one of the major complaints about Decred (DCR) is the lack of GUI wallet and the need to do everything via the console which is a problem for many not so advanced users. Many of you might remember a few months ago when Ethereum has officially launched and the mining started it had the same issue – there was no official GUI wallet available at launch. Decred has an official online wallet that is currently available, however many people are complaining of issues trying to claim their airdrop coins or even do a simple transaction via the web wallet, we’ve had our fair share of issues trying to use it as well. So here comes DecredJWallet (source) to help you with the best thing you can currently use as a GUI wallet for Decred (DCR).

DecredJWallet is a user made Java-based GUI wallet for Decred that interfaces with dcrd and dcrwallet as a backend providing a more user friendly interface for doing simple tasks via a graphical interface such as checking your balance, viewing transfers made or send and receive coins. In order to use the DecretJWallet GUI wallet you need to copy the JAR file of the wallet where your Decred binaries are located and double click it to run it. Then you need to provide the details to connect to the Decred daemon, no need to run it manually, the GUI wallet will do this for you after you provide the connection details. The best thing is that you can just run DecredJWallet on top of already working Decred node and will open your existing wallet if you have generated one already. So if you are having trouble using the online wallet or the command line tools then check out the DecretJWallet as it may be quite helpful and make your life easier, it works on the testnet as well as the mainnet, we have tested it on the main network and it worked just fine.

Decred (DCR) Altcoin Mining Starts Later Today

A quick reminder that in a few hours the official launch of Decred (DCR), a new interesting PoW/PoS altcoin is happening. Decred is currently running on testnet with the official launch of the mainnet planned on 12:00 PM CST February 8th, 2016 – you can watch a live countdown here. here crypto currency uses Blake256 14-rounds algorithm for mining and there is a cgminer fork (source) already available, though currently only getwork is supported and not stratum. The cgminer for Decred GPU mining is available below, compiled for 64-bit Windows, ready for mining solo or on some of the mining pools for DCR. This cgminer works on both AMD and Nvidia GPUs as the currently available ccMiner forks from tpruvot and sp do not yet have support for Decred even though they do have support for Blake256 14-rounds algorithm.

If you manage to catch the official launch it is better to start by solo mining with a local wallet as this might be more profitable at the start and then switch to some of the available Decred (DCR) mining pools. This might be a bit of a challenge however as there is no yet a GUI wallet for the coin, so you will need to use the console version of the wallet to make things work before you are able to start mining solo. There are already binaries available for the wallet, but they are password protected and the password will be posted at the coin’s launch. So you have a few hours to get everything downloaded and ready for the official launch, you can even test on the testnet before the launch of the main network to make sure everything is working properly.
