In the last weeks Ethereum and its network have been the target of a constant attacks resulting in various issues and disruption of the normal operation of the network and users having trouble with transactions. The attacker(s) apparently have been very crafty in locating vulnerabilities in the client implementations as well as the protocol specification and abusing them in order to make things hard for everyone else mining or using Ethereum. According to the Ethereum developers the most visible consequence of the attacks for most users is that they are having difficulties getting transactions included in blocks, and full nodes are facing memory limitations in managing the bloated state. This needs to be addressed with a hardfork and that hard fork was initially planned to happen at block 2457000, but has since been postponed for block 2463000 to allow for more testing of the new code before it becoming live. This is supposed to happen sometime around the coming Tuesday, October 18th. Do note that around that time some exchanges may temporary disable Ethereum (ETH) trading and withdraws/deposits in order to avoid possible issues when the hardfork hits, so make sure to be careful operating with any Ethereum coins around that time.

With just a few hundred blocks left before we reach the Ethereum hardfork planned for block 1150000 you should make sure you have updated any local geth or eth clients you are running, including any version of the GUI wallet. With this hardfork Ethereum will move to the next phase called Homestead – the second major version release of the Ethereum platform, which includes several protocol changes and a networking change that requires the hardfork.
The latest Go Ethereum (geth) with Homestead support is release 1.3.5 and the latest C++ version of Ethereum (eth) with Homestead support is version 1.2.2. A large number of the Ethereum nodes have already been updated, but there are still some that are running older versions of the software that are not ready for the hardfork. The latest official Ethereum GUI Wallet with Homestead support is 0.5.2 (Beta 10), so if you are using it make sure you also have the latest version installed in order to avoid any possible issues associated with the hardfork.

There are just about 57000 blocks left before we reach the Ethereum hardfork planned for block 1150000 when Ethereum will move to the next phase called Homestead. Do note that Homestead is the second major version release of the Ethereum platform, which includes several protocol changes and a networking change that requires the hardfork. The Ethereum clients with support for the Homestead are already available for download and it is recommended to upgrade any Ethereum nodes or local wallets if you are using such at this time in order to be ready for the hardfork.
The initial Go version of Ethereum (geth) for Homestead is release 1.3.4, but there is already 1.3.5 and the initial C++ version of Ethereum (eth) for Homestead is the version 1.2.0 with version 1.2.2 already available with some fixes. Do not wait for the last possible moment or after the 1150000th block is here in order to avoid any possible issues resulting from the hardfork. A large number of the Ethereum nodes have already been updated, but there are still some that are running older versions of the software that are not ready for the hardfork. Hopefully all of the Ethereum mining pools and the nodes running 24/7 on the network will be ready for the hardfork that should hit in a little over a week from now.
