New sgminer Fork for X11 Mining with Higher Performance

24 May
2014

sph-sgminer_x11mod

A few days ago a modified x11 sgminer appeared offering higher performance for AMD GPU miners. That release however has been controversial as the author did not release the source code and only binaries thus violating the GPL license of sgminer. Furthermore he has released only compiled binaries and added a forced 2% fee by hardcoding the miner to switch to another pool to mine some of the time. And while the author’s approach was not good at all, still many people used the miner just because of the significant performance increase not caring about the rest. The good news is that there is now a fork of sph-sgminer from lasybear that uses the kernel from the controversial miner providing the same performance, but with the source code available and no 2% forced fee. We have tried it and can confirm it is working well, we have also compiled a windows binary that you can download and try.

To download the new sph-sgminer_x11mod with performance increase for X11 crypto mining…

my settings for r9 290X gives me 3.38MH/s.

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
sgminer.exe -k darkcoin -o stratum+tcp://stratum1.suchpool.pw:3335 -u name.worker -p password –failover-only -o stratum+tcp://stratum2.suchpool.pw:3335 -u name.worker -p password –intensity 21 –worksize 512 -g 1 –thread-concurrency=35594

Anyone have higher hashrate? what settings u use?

Kintaro

May 25th, 2014 at 13:05

oops…edit… was my previous settings .. now with this fork i use the conf filr which came with the download aand i just added this in batfile.

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
sgminer.exe -k darkcoin -o stratum+tcp://stratum-eu.suchpool.pw:3335 -u name.worker -p password –failover-only -o stratum+tcp://stratum1.suchpool.pw:3335 -u name.worker -p password

Delete all .bin files in ur ccminer directory … and than make ur adjustments… hope this will help :)

Thanks for your replys Kintaro,

I personally have not had anywhere near your levels of success with my R9 290 despite following your instructions here the maximum I have been able to get is 2.4mh. Exactly the same as with the old sgminer. As far as I can tell I have no other bottlenecks in the system.

I had very good success with my 280x which went from 2.1mh to 2.8mh for exactly the same power consumption.

Anyone else with this issue or ideas on where to look to fix it would be very appreciated as I have spent quite a few hours on this now and I am stumped.

I have tried this new sgminer on the latest version of PIMP with 3 280X Vapor-X and get the same hash rate as with the original sgminer, not sure what gives?

May 25th, 2014 at 16:33

I can’t get it to work, when I use -k x11mod I get the following:
sgminer.exe: -k: Invalid parameter to set_kernel

Kevin Wolf

May 25th, 2014 at 22:54

This can’t possibly be the same kernel as the 2% fee miner. I copied my conf file over to this new miner and changed the kernel type to x11mod. It instantly crashes the display driver. The same conf file gave me 3.7MH on my 290s on the 2% fee miner, and I can only get 2.7MH on this version since it won’t work with intensity above 15 without crashing the display driver.

Sorry, but this is a bunk release.

Dave,

yes I have same problem with my R9 290 sapphire it just crushes at intensity level 20, but my 280 working fine at 2.9M – 3.06M..

May 25th, 2014 at 23:56

It seems that is not optimized for R9 290

Dave

May 26th, 2014 at 01:10

dida,

my 290 is a sapphire also. maybe there is something in that?

Could you show us your config for 280x? I seem to be having trouble with stability overnight even at 2.8. are you using -I 13?

Dave

May 26th, 2014 at 04:53

Captgh

May 26th, 2014 at 05:27

My hashrate increased by a little more than a third. So this is pretty significant. Well worth the upgrade.

Dave

May 26th, 2014 at 08:30

Just an update for anyone who may be interested or having a similar issue,

I found that the issue I was having with my 280x was simply due to my undervolted bios. I flashed back to the standard 1.2v bios set Engine clock 1100mhz, Memory 1500mhz and Intensity 15 in the standard config file and left everything else as it was when dowloaded. to reach 3.1Mh.

This is different from when I was mining scrypt where I was able to find the cards peak speed and then undervolt until I started to lose stability again.

Now to work on that pesky 290 :-)

I also have 4 R9 290X’s and the display driver crashes when I try to run this modified SGMiner. Instant blue-screen. UGH! Please fix ASAP! It runs great on my other system with an old GPU.

guyver

May 26th, 2014 at 11:32

yep this crashes my display drivers. if i try and increase the intensity past 15.
And get lower hashrate 2.8mh instead of 3M with the force 2% fee version

Ehculep

May 26th, 2014 at 12:32

Same hashrate as before with 7950HD : 1862Mh/s GPU 1100Mhz Memory 1500Mhz V:0.962v I:18, If I>18 it crash …

But thanks for the effort.

The windows binary has been updated from the latest source that includes some fixes and improvements, now you should also be able to go with Intensity higher than 15 as well, so redownload from the link above.

Getting 3.5MH/s here but my GPU clocks are not setting, I have not changed my config from the old miner but now if I check AMD overdrive the card is running stock clocks?

Config :

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
sgminer -k darkcoin -o stratum+tcp://useast.blackcoinpool.com:3333 -u xxxxx -p xxxx –thread-concurrency 32765 -I 20 -g 1 -w 256 –lookup-gap 2 –no-submit-stale –queue 1 –scan-time 60 –gpu-memclock 1500 –gpu-engine 900

Hi guys,

Is this where I am meant to download the file for windows? https://cryptomining-blog.com/wp-content/files/sph-sgminer_x11mod.zip

I downloaded it and tried to run it but it doesn’t work. I noticed in the config file it says “kernel-path” : “/usr/local/bin/” which looks like a linux path so I changed it to my windows path but I get a fatal error in the configuration file. Pleas help, thanks

admin

May 26th, 2014 at 18:39

Jose, the only thing you need to change in the config is the pool/worker info and you are ready to go, though you might also want to try different configurations for slightly better performance with the values of Intensity, Worksize etc.

This version not work for me, the program crash and not respond,i use R9 280X

Thanks admin,

I did exactly as you said. I downloaded a fresh copy of the miner. Changed the the pool/worker info and double-clicked sgminer.exe

I got the following error:

clDevicesNum returned error, no GPUs usable
All devices disabled, cannot mine!

No problems when I run the same configuration settings with my previous version of sgminer

Thank you for your help

admin

May 26th, 2014 at 20:25

Jose, what mining hardware are you using – number of GPUs and their models? The standard configuration is optimized for use on 280x video cards? It seems that on your side the GPUs are not being detected properly…

Jose

May 26th, 2014 at 20:34

I am using all AMD R9 280x cards. 4 sapphire and 1 MSI.

I tried on 2 more miners. 1 works, so 1/3 work so far with this miner. It does seems there is a hardware issue but old sgminer works on all :(

Could anybody please give a quick tutorial on starting to use this sgminer fork?
How do I start mining XC11 from the ground up using this as well? I have a R9 280x OC.

Thank you!

admin

May 29th, 2014 at 14:40

TT, just set your pool and workers in the conf file and run sgminer… it is as easy as that.

TT

May 29th, 2014 at 14:52

admin: thanks for the fast response! I’m just testing it on my laptop. I’m getting the rest of my rig tomorrow.
sgminer gives warnings for_
“gpu_max_alloc_percent is not specified!”
“gpu_use_sync_objects is not specified!”
How do I fix these? There are no options for them in the conf file.

Maybe someone could post their R9 280x configuration?

admin

May 29th, 2014 at 15:04

These warnings are not a problem, though you can get rid of them by creating a bat file with the following contents and run the bat file instead of directly running sgminer.exe:

set GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100
set GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1
timeout 1
start /realtime sgminer.exe

TT

May 29th, 2014 at 15:27

Thanks again!
So I will just download sph-sgminer_x11mod.zip, unpack, create the .bat, configure and put my pool credentials and fire up the .bat. I have my wallet set up.
I wonder if I need an extra cooler for my R9 280x OC.. it does have three fans already and pretty efficient heat removal.

R9 280X bat file:set GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100
set GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1
sgminer.exe -k darkcoin –failover-only -o stratum+tcp://stratum1.suchpool.pw:3335 -u x -p x -o stratum+tcp://115.28.143.237:10936 -u x -p x -I 15 -g 2 -w 256 –lookup-gap 2 –shaders 2048 –gpu-engine 1100 –gpu-memclock 1500 –auto-fan –temp-target 70 –temp-cutoff 90

Rig Claims 3.2 MHs but puts out a steady 3.1 MHs
Rig might run a slight bit cooler
Jump from 2.3Mhs to 3.1MHs…. wow thank you very much for the update :D

I’ll report again after I get some time under my belt

Create a bat file then run from it?

I did it as in cgminer to litecoin..but not working.

3 rigs going up from 12 MH/s to 17 MH/s
using 6 * 7790 5* 7850 and 2 * r9 270

I’am using xintensity

The rig with 6 * 7790 has moved up from 220 kh/s scrypt per card to 1.1 Mh/s x11 per card.
(but this stays only for some hour then one card after each other fell down to 925 kh/s)

But still impressive

Whem running sgminer v. 4.1 (downloadded several versions) after change conf, run sgminer and it hangs and stops working.
Any ideas to improve CPU hash, and get GPU to work?

Couldn’t get script to install X11mod onto BAMT 1.6.2, but was able to side load sph-sgminer_x11mod and it’s averaging 2.4Mhs vs 1.8Mhs regular sph-sgminer from BAMT on my 7950 cards. Also went from 300 watts per card scrypt mining to under 200 watts per card X11 mining. I’m using LTCRabbit and Wafflepool.

Kaspersky flags as virus, probably because other version by girino was flagged as non GPL compliant. Or, is there really a virus in the Lazybear version?

admin

June 23rd, 2014 at 22:25

Jackboy, It is a common problem, most antivirus software detects and reports many of the miners based on cpuminer, cgminer etc. as possible viruses. If you wish you could just compile the miners from source, but you’d still get the same warnings.

I’ve got 2 x 7950 both running 2.9mhs. I’m hearing that they can get up to 3.5mhs but maybe not my cards. If I push my cards any more than this, I get the “card is sick” error after several hours of hashing. I’ve gotten my cards up to 3.2mhs but it will only last about 1 hour before they get “sick” and backing down to 2.9mhs it’s been stable for several days now.

thread concurrency 21712
GPU threads 4
intensity = 18
GPU clock and Mem clock is as high as my cards are stable (1100 and 1250)

bringing intensity up to >18 makes the cards “sick”
intensity = 19 : sick after 6+ hours 3mhs no hw
intensity = 20 : sick after 4+ hours 3.1mhs no hw
intensity = 21 : sick after 2+ hours 3.2mhs no hw
intensity = 22 : sick after 1+ hours 3.3mhs no hw

If I change my thread concurrency, I get hw errors even at intensity = 13-14 (tried 8192, 24000) didn’t bother trying others…
