new-video-drivers-gtx-750-ti-overclock

Nvidia has just released new GeForce video drivers version 335.23 WHQL that removes the limit of +135 MHz maximum overclock for the GPU that was previously available on all GTX 750 Ti video cards. This allows or more serious overclock of the GPU and thus for increased performance in terms of hashrate if your GTX 750 Ti video card is able to handle the extra overclock of the GPU. We have already tried the new driver on our reference design GeForce GTX 750 Ti board and MSI Afterburner now allows us to go to up to +1000 MHz on the GPU unlike being limited to maximum +135 MHz with the older drivers. The maximum we were able to get our card working stable at was +175 MHz on the GPU that has allowed us to squeeze a few more KHS out of the video card. Note that we have the video card flashed with modified BIOS with increased power target limit, if you do not modify the video BIOS even if you set he GPU frequency higher you might not be able to get your hashrate increased due to reaching the power target limit.

gigabyte-gtx-750-ti-crypto-mining

The Geforce GTX 750 Ti video cards based on the new Maxwell architecture from Nvidia have generated quite a lot of interest among the users mining crypto currencies thanks to their very good hashrate per watt of used power. And after we have tried a reference GTX 750 Ti board that does perform pretty well and overclocks decently to provide some extra hashrate we are now moving to trying out different non-reference design video cards based on the GTX 750 Ti. Out goal is to find the best choice for overclocking and gaining the maximum possible performance for use the GPU for mining crypto currencies. So we took a Gigabyte GTX 750 Ti (N75TOC-2GI) video card for a spin to see what we can get out of that board…

The default Scrypt mining performance with CUDAminer was about 273 KHS, or slightly more than what we got with the reference card at stock frequencies of about 265 KHS. The two advantages of the Gigabyte board were the presence of an external PCI-E power connector and the much better cooling solution compared to the stock cooler. However we have found out that the TDP limit of the Gigabyte was still set at 38.5W in the video BIOS, though with the Power Target limit removal method you can get much higher limit set and avoid the Power Target functionality limiting your performance.

Overclocking the Gigabyte GTX 750 Ti card to +135 MHz for the GPU and +700 MHz for the video memory brought the Scrypt mining performance to about 303 KHS (the maximum stable clocks for mining), however we were hitting the TDP limit. So we have increased the TDP limit to 65.5W by modifying the video BIOS and flashing the modified version on the Gigabyte board and the result we got with the same overclocked frequencies was up to 322 KHS. Unfortunately the Gigabyte board did not allow for higher GPU frequencies that +135 MHz or to increase the GPU voltage higher than the default value. And while 322 KHS with a silent operation and 42 degrees C of the GPU is not a bad result at all, we are going to be checking out other different GTX 750 Ti boards to see if we are going to be able to get a bit more hashrate than that. So stay tuned for more updates on that…

decred-dcr-mining-calculator

Mining calculators help miners to easily calculate what will be the profit with their available hashrate for a given period taking into account thing such as network difficulty and price of a given crypto coin. There is an easy to use and simple Decred mining calculator available that can give you an idea on how much coins you can expect to mine in a day, month and year with your hashrate. It can be quite helpful for people mining with GPUs to consider what currency is more profitable to mine at the moment and how much they may be able to earn mining Decred. Most people are well aware that at the moment Ethereum (ETH) is probably the most profitable to mine with GPUs, however Decred is not that far behind and you can easily compare your expected profit with Decred if you are currently mining Ethereum.

There are some GPUs that do not meet the minimum requirements that Ethereum has such as the availability of at least 2 GB of video memory, or the performance may not be very good for mining ETH with the specific video card. Such is the case with Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti, a popular lower-end Nvidia-bssed GPU for mining that does not do very well with Ethereum, but can do quite good with Decred as a good alternative. So our advice is to give Decred a go, especially if you have some GPUs that are not OK for Ethereum mining for various reasons. Do note however that Decred is heavier on GPU and has a higher power usage compared to Ethereum, so the power cost is also a bit higher.

In the example screenshot above we see that a single GTX 970 GPU doing around 1300 MHS mining Decred should give you around 1.87 DCR per day or about $4.6189 USD equivalent with the current conditions. For the sake of comparison running the numbers through an Ethereum mining calculator for that same GTX 970 GPU we get 0.476424 ETH or about $5.13 USD per day, so the difference in terms of profitability is not that big as we have already explained.
