There is a new major release of the Braiins OS open source miner firmware for Bitmain’s most popular S9 series of ASIC miners available now. In fact there are now two different versions available Braiins OS community edition and Braiins OS+ enterprise edition, both available for free, with a different feature set and some specifics we’ll cover in a moment. You can use the new Braiins OS or OS+ to replace the original Bitmain firmware on Antminer S9, S9i and S9j and soon hopefully the newer S17 and T17 models will also be supported along with other devices in the future. Braiins OS is fully open-source and customizable so you can tweak it to fit your needs, it supports AsicBoost, supports Stratum V1 and V2 implementation, uses a custom BOSminer developed from scratch in Rust and provides some extra useful features that can help you tweak your ASIC miners and get more of your hardware. The Braiins OS community edition is completely free and open-source without the need to pay for it or any developer fees, unlike the case with some other custom firmware solutions.

The new Braiins OS+ enterprise edition is built on top of the standard community editions and has some extra features available, most interesting of which are the auto-tuning feature to increase hashrate and the low power mode for maximum efficiency as well as the pre-heat option. The rest is like in the standard edition, but the extra features allow you to tweak even better your performance or energy efficiency, depending on your specific needs. The small catch with the Braiins OS+ enterprise edition is that for the extra features you get you will have to agree to the 2% built-in developer fee, however you will also get a 50% reduction (from 2% to 1%) of the pool fee if you use the miners with Braiins OS+ on the Slush Pool for mining. Thanks to the auto-tuning feature in which algorithms automatically evaluate the optimal frequencies for hashing chip-by-chip, instead of treating the entire machine as one single unit the extra performance you may get from a miner should be much more than the fee that you will need to pay.

If you are a small crypto miner and not a large mining operation you may find it very hard to acquire up to date Bitcoin ASIC miners as the demand is still pretty high and the wait time is long. If you manage to find an ASIC miner is stock the chances are the price will be significantly higher as they are being resold with serious profit by people that prefer to make money this way instead of mining with the devices. At the moment there are pretty much 4 main manufacturers of Bitcoin ASIC miners that sell to end users and in small quantities and as you might expect they do not have anything in stock as the wait time is in months.

1. Bitmain AntMiner S9 (13.5 THS)
Bitmain is the most popular name among the ASIC manufacturers and probably the biggest one as well and even they are struggling to have stock of the AntMiner S9 ASIC miners they produce. It is interesting to note that the S9 has started shipping in the summer of 2016 and is still their top product. Bitmain has already sold all of their production up until the end of March, so when they release a new batch it will be scheduled for delivery sometime in April earliest.

2. Canaan AvalonMiner 821 (11 THS)
Canaan has been making their Avalon miners for years, though they were a bit slower in terms of specifications as compared to Bitmain and not as popular among end user miners. Their latest AvalonMiner 821 was announced in December last year and just started shipping its first batches for people that have preordered early. You can currently preorder AvalonMiner 821 for shipping/delivery in the second half of March, so you can probably get these a bit earlier than if you wait to preorder an AntMiner.

3. Ebang Ebit Miner E10 (18 THS)
Ebang’s Ebit miners are mostly popular in Asian countries, though they are trying to get to a wider market and their latest announcement of a 10 nm ASIC miner – the E10 made some waves. It is however an expensive device and still hard to get with a minimum purchase quantity of 20 units and all batches already sold through the end of March.

4. Halong Mining DragonMint 16T Miner (16 THS)
Halong Mining is a newcomer that just recently announced their plans to enter the Bitcoin ASIC miner market to try and fight with the market dominance that BitMain already has. They are still yet to start shipping their first devices in March this year and you cannot currently preorder units on their website with new batches probably to be available for April earliest.

Bitmain has announced a new AntMiner T9 ASIC miner that should go on sale today for $1104 USD offering 11.5 THS hashrate. The new miner is based on the previous AntMiner S9, though it comes with a bit less chips that are apparently clocked at a higher operating frequency. The new T9 is a bit cheaper, but not as efficient as the S9 as based on the official specs it consumes about 1450W for the 11.5 THS while the Batch 22 of the S9 came with 11 THS at 1078W and Batch 23 was with 14 THS for 1372W. The new T9 miner comes with just 171 BM1387 chips while the S9 was based on 189 BM1387 chips. The two fans cooling the new device are the same as on S9, so you can expect similar level of noise from the device. So in short the new AntMiner T9 does not in fact seem so attractive to miners, but with the lack of new S9 miners you might not have much of a choice…
