Are You Ready for the Grin Hardfork on January 16th

It is time for the next GRIN hardfork that is scheduled to happen tomorrow, January 16th on block 524160. The fork includes an algorithm change of the Cuckarood29 to the new Cuckaroom29, the other algorithm that Grin uses C31 will not be affected by the fork. So if you want to continue mining Grin after the fork with C29 you will need to update your mining software with support for the new Cuckaroom29 algorithm.

AMD GPU miners might want to check out the latest lolMiner 0.9.5.1 that has introduced support for Cuckaroom29 on AMD GPUs with 8GB video memory. Nvidia GPU miners might want to check out the latest GMiner 1.93 that also brought support for Cuckaroom29, but the developer fee is 3% for that algorithm at the moment. The latest GMiner also brings support for Cuckarood29v algorithm (MoneroV), though the dev fee there is a hefty 10%.

The Second Grin Hard Fork is Planned for January 2020

The Grin project has already successfully hard forked once already earlier this year with a change in the C29 PoW algorithm from Cuckaroo29 to Cuckarood29 and now a second hard fork has been planned. Grin’s Hard Fork 2 is planned for block 524160 that should be reached sometime in January next year (around the middle of the month) with the testnet expected to fork a month earlier. Compatible versions of grin node, grin-wallet, and grin-miner will be versioned 3.0.0 or greater with the first releases of these are scheduled for December.

Grin remains true to its commitment to tweak CuckARoo as part of every network upgrade it does in order to discourage manufacturers from building specialized ASIC mining hardware for it, ASICs on the other hand are encouraged and being developed for the other algorithm C31 that Grin uses. As such, the currently used algorithm Cuckarood29 will be deprecated for a new algorithm called Cuckaroom. This means that if you want to be able to continue mining Grin with the C29 algorithm after mid-January next year after the fork happens you would need to update your miner software to support the new algorithm. The first beta binaries of the software should be available in the next couple of days along with details about the new algorithm, so miner software developers will have enough time to integrate the required changes for the new algorithm by the time the hard fork executes.

Team Red Miner 0.6.0 With Support for the Ethash Algorithm

Team Red Miner is a performance optimized cryptocurrency miner for AMD GPUs with support for lyra2rev3, lyra2z, phi2, CryptoNight v8 (CNv2) and CryptoNight R (CNv4), X16 variants, MTP, Cuckarood29 and Cuckatoo31 and now adding Ethash support as well in the latest 0.6 release. The miner is available for both Windows and Linux operating systems, a closed source software with 2.5% to 3% development fee built-in for all algos except Ethash, for Ethash on Polaris GPUs the dev fee is 0.75% and on all other GPUs is 1.0%.

A quick test of the Team Red Miner 0.6.0 for mining ETH (current DAG 299) on AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB GPUs has shown hashrate very similar to what other Ethash miners are capable of delivering on the same hardware, so performance wise things seem to be very good. Of course why to switch from one Ethash miner that you might be already familiar with such as Claymore’s Dual Miner to another that has just introduced support… that is up to you to decide, though you should give it a try.
