Even though most people are either GPU mining or using specialized ASIC miners for most crypto coins, there are still some that are only CPU mineable or at least are worth CPU mining even if they do come with a GPU miner as well. Since we are getting questions what crypto coin to mine if you have some spare CPU power available, we have compiled a short list of coins that you might want to check out. Do note that with a single CPU you will most likely not earn much mining any CPU coin, but if you have multiple CPUs available along with free electricity the outcome might be better…

Crypto coins to check for CPU mining:
Boolberry (BBR)
Coin Magi (XMG)
Cryptonite (XCN)
DigitalNote (XDN)
Monero (XMR)

The list is alphabetically ordered are there are a few other CPU coins available as well besides the ones listed above, many of these based on the CryptoNight algorithm used by XMR and some others as well, so if you are interested you can dig a bit more into the alternatives. Alternatively you can look for new coin launches that only come with CPU mining, these can be profitable to mine initially as well.

The new fork of ccMiner by tsiv with support for the CryptoNight algorithm used by coins such as Monero (XMR) (source) has been updated to provide better performance – up to about 18% increase on GTX 750 Ti according to the author. Our tests have shown that on a GeForce GTX 750 Ti video card we are getting about 250 H/s in terms of hashrate, so definitely good improvement over the previous release. If you are mining CryptoNight coins such as Monero on Nvidia GPUs, then you should consider upgrading the miner software to the new version to get higher hashrate.

ccminer-cryptonight-fork

Today a new fork of the ccMiner software for Nvidia GPU mining was released with the addition of support for the CryptoNight algorithm used by coins such as Monero (XMR), the fork by tsiv is still an initial beta and is quite heavy and not optimized, but works. We have compiled and released a windows binary of the miner for anyone interested to try it out, our tests have shown that on a GeForce GTX 750 Ti video card we are getting about 205-210 H/s in terms of hashrate. If you run the miner on your main GPU your computer will most likely be very unresponsive after the miner starts, but this will not mean it is frozen.

Do note that the windows binary you can download below is compiled for Compute 3.0,3.5 and 5.0 cards (32-bit version only) in a single binary, so it will not work on older cards. If you are unsure what version of Compute does your video card support check the included GPU Compute Capabilities List file. It is also compiled with Visual Studio 2012, so if you do not already have Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 you will have to download and install it, otherwise you may be getting error for a missing DLL library.
