KNCMiner Solar, New 16nm ASIC Chips Coming in 2015

KNCMiner has announced that they will have a new 16 nm based ASIC chip called Solar ready in early 2015 (most likely a SHA-256 ASIC for Bitcoin mining). The company expects that their 5000+ core Solar 16nm (FinFET) processor technology will deliver at least a six-fold increase in performance compared to the previous generation 20nm hardware thus achieving 0.07 Watts per GHS. This should allow an increase of up to 10 times in the hashrate with the same power consumption of the previous generation of hardware. Interestingly enough the company only announced the new chips only and no miners that will be based on them, something that may not be so bad as an idea considering the negative opinion miners have on pre-orders including the previous ones from KNC. Regardless, it will be harder for KNC to sell new miners to customers unless they already have the hardware available and ready for shipping and not giving promises that they may not keep on shipping date. So the fact that no ASIC miner products using the new Solar chips are being announced yet could mean KNC can decide to use them in their cloud data centers only and not offer them to end users at all. KNCMiner is not without a competition however, CoinTerra, another ASIC manufacturer has already announced that they are working on 16nm chips and that miners based on them will be available in 2015. The fact that the 16nm production process is not yet widely available and ready for mass production would however mean that the first ASIC chips made using it may be pricier, at least until the yield of good chips is high enough. The development of very complex chips with thousands of cores is another thing that will require a serious financial support, but apparently KNC does not need to make pre-orders this time to get the money required from miners.

More Scrypt ASICs Apparently Shipping, Some Still Not

It seems that MAT (Mining Asics Technologies) has “resumed shipping” or more like actually started shipping their Scrypt ASIC miners to customers, there is even a user review of their 250 MHS Excalibur miner. Interestingly enough there is also a discussion going on that the MAT Scrypt ASIC miners and the Alcheminer Scrypt ASIC miner use essentially the same hardware. If this is true the it is interesting who is the actual manufacturer of the hardware when even the timing of the two companies in releasing ans shipping hardware also pretty much coincides. We can speculate that either Alcheminer or MAT has developed the hardware and one company is the OEM supplier for the other company, though there is no official information linking the two companies… or the actual designer and manufacturer of the chips could be a completely different company.

Another Scrypt ASIC manufacturer, namely Alpha Technology has still not started shipping their miners. The company did not manage to meet their initial target to start shipping in September and has announced that they should be able to do it in October. Now, at the end of the month we still haven’t seen an announcement that the company is ready with the actual miners and will start shipping this month, so we can assume that the target for shipping has slipped to November. Eve though about the company has shown some photos of their ASCI chips earlier this month they are apparently not ready with the complete solution yet. Alpha Technology like many other Scrypt ASIC manufacturers that do or did take pre-orders does not like much to keep their customers up to date on how things are progressing, even after failing to meet their promises, so status updates are still rarely released.

KnCMiner is apparently also shipping again some more Titan Scrypt ASIC miners to customers after they have recently promised to ship all of the remaining Batch 1 pre-orders in the next three weeks. As a result we are seeing some more significant increase in the total network hashrate and difficulty of the Litecoin network with the Titans performing best when mining high difficulty coins such as LTC. That however does not contribute that much to making customers of the company happy as people are still not satisfied by how KNC is not keeping their promises.

KnCMiner Preparing New ASIC Miner to be Released by the End of the Year

KnCMiner has posted something interesting on Twitter in response to the story about them stopping to sell mining hardware to end users and focusing on building their data centers that was started by Bloomberd, apparently the company does not have such plans and is already working on something new to be introduced by the end of the year. It is a fact however that at the moment KnCMiner is not selling miners to customers, their Neptune Bitcoin miners and Titan Scrypt miners are not being sold – they are listed as out of stock. The cloud mining services that are apparently being offered are in fact also not being sold as no matter what location you set you cannot complete the purchase of hashrate (there is a mention about the cloud offer “available in select territories”, but no mention which ones if any). Furthermore many of the current customers are not happy with KnCMiner as they are failing to deliver on their promises, a lot of people are still waiting for their long promised bonus Bitcoin miners and many people still have not received their Titan Scrypt ASICs even though the we are already past the promised Q2/Q3 delivery. The people that have received their Titan miners are complaining from various issues and KNC is not issuing refunds even after failing to deliver on their promises. So with the current not so favorable situation for the company, even if they try to continue to sell mining hardware to end users they may find it hard to convince people to buy it…
