It Is All About BTC, LTC, ETH, DOGE, KAS mining as well as other alternative crypto currencies
Ethereum launched Frontier – the first release of the project including actual mining of Ether with CPU and GPU at the end of last month. The Frontier release comes with a command line only interface with a Javascript environment that allows building, testing, deploying and using decentralized applications on the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum is being described as a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts: applications that run exactly as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship, fraud or third party interference. So far the available code is mostly intended for developers and though the network is active it is not very user friendly to normal people that might be interested in trying to mine some Ether. Ethereum’s next release named Homestead is supposed to offer in a few months a user friendly interface for normal users.
We have prepared a short guide that should get you started with Ethereum mining using the Frontier release on Windows and we have prepared the required software to create your own address as well as how you can mine solo or in a mining pool using either your CPU or GPU (OpenCL or CUDA). We want to warn you that although getting started with the basic usage and mining may not be that hard, to be able to take advantage of all of Ethereum’s features you’d need to spend some more time getting to know it as it things are not like with your average Bitcoin clone. We are going to be using geth (source), ethminer (source) and ethminer-cuda (source), you can download the package containing the Windows binaries for both from the link below then you need to follow the following instructions:
Generating wallet address:
– Open the geth folder and rungeth-console.bat
to start Ethereum in console mode
– The software will need to download the blockchain data, it can take some time
– In the console type:personal.newAccount("password")
– Instead of password in the quotes above write your own password and remember it well
– In the console type:eth.accounts
– This will list your Ethereum wallet address
– To check your account balance you can type:web3.fromWei(eth.getBalance(eth.coinbase), "ether")
Sending Ether to another wallet:
– First you need to unlock your account by typing in the console the following (replace password with your password):personal.unlockAccount(eth.accounts[0], "password")
– In the console type:eth.sendTransaction({from: 'your_address', to: 'recipient_address', value: web3.toWei(1, "ether")})
– In the above code replace your_address and recipient_address with the respective addresses, the example is for sending 1 Ether, but you can change the value depending on your needs
Mining locally on the CPU:
– Rungeth-console.bat
and to start CPU mining type:miner.start(4)
– The number in the quotes is the number of threads to use
– To stop CPU mining locally type:miner.stop()
Pool CPU/GPU mining using ethminer:
– Open the ethminer folder and edit the three bat files with your wallet address
– For CPU mining on the pool run:pool-cpu.bat
– For OpenCL mining on the pool run:pool-ocl.bat
– For CUDA mining on the pool run:pool-cuda.bat
The ethminer software uses the ethpool mining pool for mining, the pool fee is 2% and there is a flat fee of 0.01 Ether per payout charged with minimum payout of 1 Ether, also the pool is beta and there could be some issues. The geth software contains only CPU miner while ethminer supports CPU (up to about 2 times faster than geth CPU mining), OpenCL GPU mining for AMD (also works on Nvidia) and CUDA GPU mining. You can use OpenCL mining on Nvidia GPUs as well, could work on older GPUs that do not work with the CUDA miner. If you have integrated GPU it can also be detected as OpenCL capable and the miner may try to run on it, so you can try to use the --opencl-platform
and --opencl-device
command line parameters to avoid the problem.
Mining performance:
– ethminer CPU mining on Intel Core i7 5820K: 0.95 MHS
– ethminer OpenCL mining on AMD Radeon R9 280X: 24.4 MHS
– ethminer OpenCL mining on Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti: 18.5 MHS
– ethminer CUDA mining on Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti: 18.7 MHS
Do note that ethminer is 64-bit only and you need to have Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable installed (the 64-bit version) as it is compiled with Visual Studio 2013 and CUDA 7.5RC. Note that it seems AMD is currently faster mining Ethereum as compared to Nvidia GPUs and CPU mining is not much worth other than for testing purposes anyway.
– Download geth and ethminer compiled for Windows and ready to be used…

What about the drivers, maybe older version? Is CPU mining working just fine on that system?
You can try downloading the archive with the files again, it now includes two versions of ethminer to try – one for CUDA (also supports OpenCL and CPU) and one with OpenCL and CPU only.

I meant “gets too many…”, “connection loses” and “that’s a lose in mining”.
As far as the older AMD/ATI cards, maybe the miner is only optimized for the Radeon HD 7XXX and later cards…..

ETH mining seems to be still buggy and not optimized, a lot of people still seem to have problems, hopefully this will be resolved with updates of the miner software. So try both versions of the ethminer, the CUDA one also supports OpenCL and CPU mining.
Solo mining is not entirely problem free, we have tried with a single GPU for a day and sometime along the day geth got in some kind of loop and was not sending work for new blocks, but was stuck at sending work for an older block that has already been solved. So solo mining can also give you problems and the risk there is higher, though if lucky you can make more than pool mining. A guide for solo mining Ethereum is coming…

If you are having trouble with Nvidia GPUs running the CUDA miner, then you can try to use them with OpenCL… it could work and the difference in performance is usually not much.

Hello,
I have downloaded the files, etc. but I still can’t understand from your post how I can mine with my GPU Cuda or smth else.
If I want to use GETH, what .bat file should I create for solo mining, what should I write there?
I run on Gerforce SLI GT 755M (2 graphics cards)
could you please reply and help me set it up correctly, thank you.

ethpool has stopped accepting new miners for the moment (new wallet addresses), so that is why it is now rejecting new user connections. You can try solo mining as unfortunately we are not aware of an alternative pool available for the moment.

nhulongpm, in the command try to replace eth.coinbase with your wallet address in quotes and see if it will work.
CoinYourBit, Google loves to mark all the mining software as a possible malware… we are constantly asking to get the site reviewed and get these false warnings removed. The source code is linked in the article for anyone that may have some concerns, you can compile yourself or download some of the other pre-compiled binaries.

Hi All, I am running Windows 10 on an Intel Celeron 1.8GH. I have downloaded the files, started geth-console.bat and still having this since 4 days. Wi-Fi has been disconnected sometimes. Does it take so long to generate a wallet address ?
Thanks

The wallet address can even be generated when you are offline, make sure you follow the guide on creation of the wallet.

Does it mean that I have the entire blockchain and can move to the adress creation ?
Thanks
admin
August 30th, 2015 at 18:51
Guido, it means that you are synchronizing the blockchain, you can see the number of the block and compare it to the latest from a blockchain explorer to make sure.

Ok, perfect it worked on Windows 10.
What about the options in “pool-cpu.bat”
ethminer -F http://us1.ethpool.org/miner/walletadresse/0.1 -C
If 0.1 is the hash rate, what is C ? G ? what about the other options ?

ethminer -F http://us1.ethpool.org/miner/0xe6a7a1d47ff21b6321162aea7c6cb457d5476bca.worker1/10 -G (+ your usual options)

-C is for CPU mining, since the hashrate of a CPU is much smaller compared to GPU you need lower difficulty.
-G is for GPU mining using OpenCL, should work on both AMD and Nvidia-based video cards.
-U is for GPU mining using CUDA, you need to use the CUDA-capable miner as the standard one is only for OpenCL.

Most of articles Ive read, says that cpu is not worth anymore, but if you have:
this: http://i.imgur.com/hfUMhXK.png
Is this worth mining ethereum?
I’m taking my first steps in the “mining” so – i need you advice :\
Thank you

If you also have free electricity it might be somewhat worth it… otherwise CPU mining is pointless.
There are other crypto coins that are CPU only or mining with CPU is not much slower than GPU mining.

Thank you for your reply admin.
Maybe a little out of topic (sorry) but could you advise me to start mining a specific crypto coin to take advantage of this cpu’s?

Goodnight everyone, I’m trying to mine with my Zogis video card Gforce 6500 1gb ddr2. however appears a driver mensangem cuda wrong version. already installed the nvidea driver straight from the site, both in windows 7 as the 10 in opcl also does not work in certain mining CPU. I’m just not getting the video card. Anyone know why?

If the miner is running only on the first GPU you can manually set all GPU IDs via the command line, so that they all are going to be used.

Error by mining with 0 H/s
I have the newest “Crimson Edition 16.2.1 Hotfix” Driver from today came arround first March 2016.

almohtarif, if you are solo mining you need to first hit a block and then you will have a local balance available, but with that low hashrate solo mining is literally pointless. If you are pool mining you should check your stats on the pool, based on the pool payout minimum and timeframe it will again take some time before any coins are sent to a local wallet.

If you have a GPU with 2GB of memory and receive the following error: “Allocating/mapping single buffer failed with: clCreateBuffer(-61). GPU can’t allocate the DAG in a single chunk. Bailing.” You can try setting the GPU_SINGLE_ALLOC_PERCENT environment variable to 100 by running in the command line the following command before the miner:
SET GPU_SINGLE_ALLOC_PERCENT=100
to see if it will fix the problem.bill21

Hello,
I got a GPU doing around 5MH/S and I decided to mine solo for now. I read about not being connected to the internet while mining solo shouldn’t make problems. Can you confirm that? In which periods do I have to start geth –rpc to keep the chain up synchronized, especially for solo mining?
Regards

There is no point to try solo mining with just 5 MHS. You need to be online when mining in order to have a synchronized blockchain.

Hello everyone,
Why is the blockchain so massive in data storage? The target is 1920000 and I’m currently at 917246, the data files currently amount to 7GB. This means the folder will be a huge amount by the time the block has finished syncing.
Is this normal? Thanks in advance.

Still does NOT work with Windows 10×64 with CUDA 9 dev kit installed.
Still does NOT work with Windows 10×64 with CUDA 6.5 only installed.
Does NOT work on nicehash statrum connections , or with a Tesla m2050 or m2070 compute 2.0. Yes, I have tried it with CUDA 6.5, 8.0, and 9. Also tried without other GPUs of a higher compute level such as 3 and 5.0 (750ti). The Tesla cards have 3GB and 6GB of GDDR5 ram.
Aborts when trying to download a work unit.
Aborts when trying to run on open CL instead.
Tried to run the sample batch files included, nada.
Tried to create a new DAG, failed.
It DOES run in benchmark mode in CUDA or OPENCL mode, so there is hope…. :}
Removed the 750ti 2gb ram gpu running alongside and it still crashes. Even though I specifically told it to use the Tesla GPU.
The ancient versions all over the github is confusing. Other searches on google not helpful.
Probably the best solution would be Windows 7 x64 and just the Tesla 341.xx drivers?
How hard is it to get all the legacy versions documented and kept online the net in order?
Do I have to recompile from source code, if so which one runs right?

I believe everything published was actually very logical.
But, what about this? what if you added a little content?
I ain’t suggesting your content is not good, but suppose you added something that
grabbed people’s attention? I mean Quick Guide on How
to Mine Ethereum on Windows – Crypto Mining Blog is a little
boring. You might peek at Yahoo’s home page and see how they create post headlines to get people to click.
You might try adding a video or a related pic or two
to grab readers interested about everything’ve got to say.
In my opinion, it would bring your posts a little livelier.
