Obelisk has started with SIA and Decred ASIC miners with a bit of controversy back in 2017, and now they are apparently planning to extend their offers with new GRIN ASIC miners for later this year as it seems this is the new hot thing for ASIC miners – the GRIN’s Cuckatoo31 algorithm. The company has announced the start of a pre-sale for their new GRN1 miner that comes in three form factors: a traditional form factor (GRN1), compact form factor (GRN1 Mini), and an immersion form factor (GRN1 Immersion). The Obelisk GRN1 miners are designed for Grin’s Cuckatoo31+ hashing algorithm and they will NOT Work on the existing Cuckaroo29+ or future Cuckatoo32+ algorithm implementations.

Obelisk will be manufacturing a maximum of 2,500 GRN1 units (60,000 chips), available in first-come, first-serve fashion. GRN1 Mini units count as 1/6th, and GRN1 Immersion units count as 2. Only 2,000 GRN1 units are available in this sale. The remaining 500 will be sold by Obelisk at market-price when production is completed in October. This sale will close on May 3, 2019. Obelisk expects to ship orders in October 2019. The Japanese GMO Internet Group has been venturing into the crypto business with ASIC mining, but now they are apparently also wanting to get into the GPU mining as well will the release of Cryptknocker software miner. A closed source Equihash 200,9 Nvidia GPU miner claiming to be the fastest in terms of hashrate that can be used for mining ZCash (ZEC) or other crypto currencies using the “original” Equihash mining algorithm. Similar to other closed source mining solutions GMO is charging a developer fee for their software from everyone that uses it, the dev fee is 2%, the same amount that the miner apparently manages to be faster compared to other alternatives. The Cryptknocker by GMO miner is available for both Linux and Windows operating systems.

Everything may sound Ok until you realize that the Cryptknocker miner only supports Equihash 200,9 mining on Nvidia GPUs and that particular parameter set is already in the domain of ASIC miners such as the Antminer Z9 or A9 Master. So why release a closed source GPU miner now and with a developer fee built in for an algorithm that is already being mined by specialized mining hardware with a much faster speed than what a GPU can do. Maybe GMO has plans to extend the supported Equihash parameter set with other variations that are still ASIC resistant in the future, but if they don’t, then this piece of software is really pointless and maybe just a PR stunt.

The Canaan Creative has released some information about their upcoming next generation Avalon A9 Bitcoin ASIC miners based on 7nm technology that will supposedly provide 30 THS hashrate with 1720 Watts of power usage. This will make the Avalon A9 much more interesting that the recently announced GMO B3 as well as the Innosilicon Terminator 2 Turbo that will not be able to provide such level of efficiency. Of course we are yet to see what will Bitmain be offering as they are still not responding to the competition with a more up to date product in the 20-30 THS range, but for now the new Avalon seems to be the most interesting efficiency wise. The price of the Avalon A9 is also going to play an important role and we are yet to see when it will be available and for how much…

Another interesting information coming from the company is their upcoming line of TV sets – LB4318 with built-in ASIC mining chips. The TV set is with a 43-inch 4K panel and features 26x A3210 16nm mining chips providing 2.8 THS hashrate with 100 Watts per THS power usage. It is definitely an interesting product with different purpose that comes with built-in mining capabilities and will show if there is going to be interest in such a range of devices in general. There has been talk about connected consumer-oriented devices with built-in crypto mining capabilities for quite some time, but we are yet to see them on the market.
