Up until not long ago Ethereum (ETH) and in general most of Ethash AMD and Nvidia GPU mining was mostly done with Claymore’s Dual Ethereum AMD+NVIDIA GPU Miner v15.0, but unfortunately the miner stopped working as it had support up to DAG Epoch 384 for Ethereum. Furthermore, Claymore, the developer of the software has apparently disappeared or at least has stopped updating his software, so miners had to go for alternatives. Currently the most popular miner that has succeeded Claymore’s miner is PhoenixMiner, but Claymore’s miner is not entirely dead yet. Enter the user Justaminer on Bitcointalk, who has apparently modified Claymore’s miner without having access to the source code in order to make it work once more.

Just_a_miner’s modification called More Epochs mod for Claymore ETH Miner v15 brings support for DAG epochs 385 and later to the miner, so that you can continue using it. The only difference is that the 1% development fee will not go to Claymore anymore (it cannot because his miner is not working anymore), but to Just_a_miner who has revived the Claymore miner back from the dead and will hopefully keep it working on the long run. His modification brings support of DAG epochs up to 500, fixes bugs of the original miner such as restoring access to nvml.dll on Windows 10, adds support of new Nvidia drivers 460.89+. So, it is not just a modification to enable support for newer DAG epochs, but other issues of the original miner also have been addressed. Currently this mod supports only the Windows version of the miner and is targeted at Nvidia GPUs, however there is also test support of several AMD Radeon GPUs: RX 470, RX 480, RX 580, Vega and Navi. The latest version of the Claymore mod from Justaminer is 1.4, so make sure you download and that one and not an earlier version.

Team Red Miner is a performance optimized cryptocurrency miner for AMD GPUs with support for a number of algorithms with the latest major version 0.8.0 bringing rewritten Ethash kernels and new mining modes for all GPU types. This means you should get better hashrate at a slightly lower power consumption on most recent AMD GPUs. In general, TeamRedMiner (TRM) behaves similarly to other AMD Ethash miners, the key difference is the additional mining modes (B/C-modes) that use additional VRAM on the GPUs for further beneficial effects.

Key highlights of the TRM 0.8.8 release:
– Polaris: Efficiency and slight hashrate increase. B-mode reintroduced for added hash. B-mode must be enabled with --eth_aggr_mode or --eth_config=Bxxx.
– Vega 56/64: greatly improved base kernel for efficiency. New B-mode that can shave off additional 1-2W on top of the A-mode kernel. B-mode must be enabled manually with --eth_config (--eth_aggr_mode does not apply). Tuning numbers have changed – do NOT keep your old static –eth_config values.
– Radeon VII: huge boost with its new C-mode but requires a special Linux setup. Can now do 100 MH/s on most air cooled VIIs. See tuning guide.
– 5700/5700XT: can shave off as much as 8-9W(!) of power using the new B-mode and dropping core clk+voltage. B-mode now the default mining mode. Unless you retune your core clk+voltage you will see a tiny power draw increase instead and not benefit from the upgrade, so read the migration guide.
– 5600XT: new B-mode has a much smaller effect. A-mode remains the default mining mode. See new tuning guide for more details.
– The DAG cache is NOT compatible with the new B/C-modes. ETH+ZIL switchers have to choose between caching the epoch 0 dag and using the new mining modes.
– Ethash 4GB kernels NOT rewritten in this release, performance remains the same as in 0.7.x.

The miner is available for both Windows and Linux operating systems, a closed source software with 2.5% to 3% development fee built-in for most algorithms except Ethash and KAWPOW, for KAWPOW it is 2% and for Ethash on Polaris GPUs the dev fee is 0.75% and for all other AMD GPUs is 1.0%.

There is a new Release Candidate (RC) version of PhoenixMiner 5.5c available that brings some new features, improvements and fixes over the things introduced already in the last beta version PhoenixMiner 5.5b. Do note that if using the miner on AMD GPUs, although it comes with support for the latest AMD Windows driver 21.1.1 it is still not recommended to use them as there seem to still be some stability issues. If you already are using the previous 5.5b beta version you might want to give this new release candidate a go, otherwise you might want to stick with the previous stable 5.4c release for a bit more.

PhoenixMiner 5.5c RC Full Changelog:
– Added support for the latest AMD Windows driver 21.1.1 (still, we don’t recommend using the 21.1.1 driver yet – we had some instability issues with it even when just idling on the desktop!)
– Added new -mcdag parameter to reset the memory overclock on Nvidia cards during DAG generation. This may allow you to set higher memory overclock on your Nvidia cards without risking corrupt DAG buffer, which can lead to excessive number of incorrect shares. Use -mcdag 1 (by default the value is 0, which means turned off) to use this new feature.
– Under Linux -mcdag 1 will execute a shell script named daggen.sh (if present in the current directory) for each Nvidia GPU, passing the GPU index as the first argument, and PCIE bus ID as second argument. The miner will then wait for about 7 seconds before starting DAG generation to allow the script enough time to reset the memory overclock.
– The -tt parameter is now strictly for controlling the fan behavior. E.g. -tt 60 sets auto-fan speed with target temperature 60C; -tt -70 sets fixed fan speed 70%; and -tt 0 turns off the fan control. All these can be specified per GPU.
– There is a new -hwm parameter that allows controlling the frequency of the hardware monitoring, which was also done by -tt in the previous versions of PhoenixMiner
– Other small improvements and fixes
