Team Red Miner is a performance optimized cryptocurrency miner for AMD GPUs with support for lyra2rev3, lyra2z, phi2, CryptoNight v8 (CNv2) and CryptoNight R (CNv4), X16 variants, MTP, Cuckarood29 and Cuckatoo31 and now adding Ethash support as well in the latest 0.6 release. The miner is available for both Windows and Linux operating systems, a closed source software with 2.5% to 3% development fee built-in for all algos except Ethash, for Ethash on Polaris GPUs the dev fee is 0.75% and on all other GPUs is 1.0%.

A quick test of the Team Red Miner 0.6.0 for mining ETH (current DAG 299) on AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB GPUs has shown hashrate very similar to what other Ethash miners are capable of delivering on the same hardware, so performance wise things seem to be very good. Of course why to switch from one Ethash miner that you might be already familiar with such as Claymore’s Dual Miner to another that has just introduced support… that is up to you to decide, though you should give it a try.

The latest GMiner 1.74 miner has introduced significant performance improvements for Cuckatoo31 algorithm used by GRIN according to the mining software’s developer. We are seeing some improvement on GTX 1080 Ti and with Cuckatoo31 for GRIN and on NiceHash currently performing well compared to everything else in terms of profitability for GPU mining it might be worth giving the new miner a go. Below you can find some official performance results from GMiner’s developer on different Nvidia GPUs using the latest version 1.74, so that you can compare with your own hardware. Do note that this update does not yet include dual mining CKB+ETH, still only Eaglesong mining alone is possible.

Cuckatoo31 performance on stock GPU settings:
– Palit GTX 1070 Dual 8GB ~0.86 G/s
– MSI GTX 1080 SEA HAWK EK X 8GB ~0.96 G/s
– Gigabyte GTX 1080 Ti AORUS Waterforce WB Xtreme Edition 11GB ~1.64 G/s
– MSI RTX 2070 Armor 8GB ~1.33 G/s

The GMiner miner software was originally only an Nvidia GPU miner, although some algorithms are already supported on AMD GPUs as well. Do note that GMiner is a closed source miner for Nvidia and AMD GPUs with binaries available for both Windows and Linux, there is a 2% developer fee built-in the software.

The first phase of Ethereum’s next major hard fork is planned to happen on less than a month around December 4th at block number 9056000. The hard fork called Istanbul is divided in two parts with the first one to be executed on December 4th and the second one planned for early 2020. The next hard fork called Serenity that will bring Ethereum 2.0 and switch the project from PoW to PoS may or may not happen before the end of 2020, so there is still time for that. Is is worth mentioning that on December 4th Ethereum (ETH) will not be switching its mining algorithm from Ethash to the much anticipated and still somewhat controversial ProgPoW as this is still planned to happen in the second Istanbul phase with the EIP-1057 scheduled for the first quarter of 2020.

If you are still mining Ethereum with ASIC miners or GPUs and the Ethash algorithm you will have more than just a month left, it could easily take up to another 6 months for ProgPoW to replace Ethash as the PoW algorithm, though it can also happen faster than that. Nevertheless this can signal the upcoming death of ETH ASIC miners as although there are a number of other projects using the Ethash algorithm, they will most likely not be able to handle the massive hashrate outflow from Ethereum if/when it forks to ProgPoW. On the other hand ProgPoW can also bring a change in the way GPUs are being used for mining as it is supposed to provide a more level playing field for the different GPUs in terms of mining performance. So definitely Ethereum’s upcoming hard forks will have a serious impact on the crypto mining sector.
