It seems that Bitmain is not over with new releases of ASIC miners, this time however the release may be only for the Asian market (now available on the English website as well) in the form of the new Antminer B3 ASIC miner for Bytom (BTM). The new Bitmain Antminer B3 is supposed to offer 780 H/s mining hashrate with 360 Watts of power usage and cost about $2700 USD with shipments starting tomorrow for a limited number of units (2500 only). What is more interesting here is that Bytom (BTM) is just launching their main network later today and mining will be just starting, so having and ASIC miner ready for pretty much the start of a crypto coin is something new. Then again Bytom has listed Bitmain as one of their partners on the website of the project, so that may actually not be of a much surprise.

Update: The Bytom (BTM) main network has launched and the coin can be mined from within the Bytom wallet with CPU only for the moment, or by using any of the Bitmain B3 ASIC miners that are apparently already on the network, no GPU mining is possible for the moment as there are no AMD/Nvidia GPU miners currently available and with ASICs already available CPU mining might not be worth it and the same may go for GPU mining as well (depends on performance).

Purk (PURK) is a new open source, mineable and autonomous cryptocurrency that is being described as a currency that can be used to monetize anything from website content, blog articles, multimedia, products and a variety of online services by allowing users to tip or donate to content owners anonymously. The developers say that Purk was created to help content owners and service providers monetize their website or application by accepting quick and easy micropayments from their users or customers. Purk is based on Boolberry and CryptoNote technology and utilizes the Wild Keccak algorithm which helps balance CPU, GPU and ASIC mining speeds, whilst providing extremely fast block verification times.

The Purk coin uses a new CPU and GPU (OpenCL) miner using Wild Keccak algorithm and compatible with both AMD and Nvidia GPUs and currently has only one official mining pool for the moment. Although it seems interesting and promising from a mining point of view as well as from user point of view, if it can deliver on the promises it makes, but unfortunately it has been plagued right from the launch yesterday. There were issues with the pool not properly reporting information to miners, but most of all connection issues that unfortunately continue and make the coin problematic to mine. You might still be interested to give it a go with the Bitcode Method and keep an eye on the development of the project, we plan to do so for at least a bit more hoping that the issues will be solved.

If you are interested in mining the coin you should know that the CPU mining is significantly slower, about 1 MHS on an Intel Core i7 6850K CPU while on GPU you can get much better results. Since the miner uses OpenCL it is going to be faster on AMD GPUs, especially on 6x AMD RX VEGA 64 for example where you can get something like 65 MHS, while on 6x Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti it is just more like 40 MHS. The miner code could be further optimized in order to improve performance because the load on the GPUs is not that high and the operating temperatures while mining Purk are pretty low compared to other algorithms.

It seems that the new craze is to make crypto coins named after birds, after Ravencoin comes Pigeoncoin and that is not a coincidence. PGN and its new X16S mining algorithm were in fact inspired by RVN and the X16r algorithm that it has introduced. The new X16S (shuffle) algorithm maintains the randomness of X16r while providing consistency for hashrate and power usage, so it can be considered as a kind of improvement especially for miners. Pigeoncoin (PGN) is just a few days old was initially only CPU mineable, but quickly the Nvidia GPU miners for Ravencoin (RVN) were ported to support the new algorithm, so it is now mineable on Nvidia GPUS as well. The main specs of the coin are: 1 minute block time, 5000 PGN reward, 21 Billion coins max cap, 2016 blocks retarget, 16 shuffled algorithms (X16S shuffle). You are welcome to check it out and mine some, especially if you have some Nvidia-based GPU mining rigs, though we are still yet to see what will be the plans for the future of this new coin as there is still not much info about that available, again similar to the situation with RVN.

If you want to give it a try mining Pigeoncoin (PGN) you can do so already on the pign.suprnova.cc mining pool along with a few other pools already available and try one of the forks of ccMiner with support for the X16S algorithm. Like the latest supminer version 1.2 from Suprnova that adds support for X16S and also supports X16r, or alternatively the Nevermore-x16s v0.1-alpha (both of these open source) and there is also a new version of the x16s Pigeoncoin Enemy miner 1.03 (a closed source binary only release). For the moment there is still no AMD GPU miner available, but one will probably follow shortly based on the X16r fork in order to also support the X16S algorithm. If you are interested in an exchange supporting trading of Pigeoncoin (PGN), well, there isn’t one available yet, but the coin is still just a few days old, so you will have to wait a bit more for that.
